The guitar can be peaceful, passionate, light and intensely rhythmic. Helen will touch on all these moods with her individual style as she combines a pure classical tone with the lightness and freedom of folk music and a flavour of truly genuine flamenco.
Trained at the Welsh College of Music and Drama, Helen James has a wealth of experience performing both classical guitar and folk music either as a soloist or in small ensembles in concert, or playing for weddings, celebrations, music festivals and garden parties at prestigious venues all around the West Country and further afield. Helen also has a beautifully trained soprano voice which she adapts in her own style to give highly original interpretations of her songs, folk lyrics and some jazz standards, accompanying herself on guitar.
Helen has composed many original songs and melodies, which are sensitive and often highly spiritual and some already published as poems. She has arranged many classical, folk and jazz melodies and songs to perform either as a classical guitar soloist, or with musical companions. There are beautiful and delicate interpretations of Irish folk tunes, wild and earthy reels and specially selected classical and jazz standards intricately arranged with much flair and originality.
Helen has run a highly successful local community singing group ‘Local Vocals’ which provides much relaxation, fun and music to a wide variety of people in the community, often giving concerts to the local community.
Helen James also rehearses and performs regular concerts with two music colleagues, Ali Nourse, a virtuoso folk fiddler and John Hooper, jazz pianist and vocalist, with whom she also runs the music agency, Campion Live Music. They either perform as two duos, ‘Ali & Helen’ and ‘Keyna’ or all three musicians together as the trio ‘Three Piece Suite’.
